Thinking of fishing this in April. Any charter recommendations?

    Google Torres brothers sportfishing.

    Bugoff,

Fishermen in the Torres family are some of the best in the Loreto area.

If you want to go through an outfitter, Baja Big Fish (Pam Bolles) has one panga and can set you up on others, and Arturo's Sportfishing has many pangas. Both BBF and Arturo's have websites.

If you want to deal directly with a local panguero, it is a buyer's market and there are many good fishermen to chose from.

Let me know if you would like recommendations of independent pangueros with whom you can deal directly.

    Bill,

We were hoping to fish something with some electronics. If that's not available there, do you know if it would be a problem to bring a depth finder and a couple downriggers. Also have some waypoints from someone who lived in the area. Would a pangero have a problem being told what to do?
    Thanks.

Capts. love to be told what to do. Most of us got our waypoints by following them to begin with.

    Mike,

Your plan is a good one. In recent years the range of local pangueros has increased with bigger outboards, and triangulating to locate bajos and other fishy spots using visual sights on landmarks ashore has in large part given way to gps (or following another panga that has it). Many pangas are also now equipped with depth finders. But, when they get where they are going almost all of the local captains fish just like their fathers and grandfathers did, by soaking bait from a stationary boat around floating or bottom structure holding fish. This is due as much to the cost of downriggers, and gasoline for higher speed trolling offshore for pelagics in the summer, as to a general reluctance to change.

The main problem in getting a local captain to incorporate your electronics and downriggers may well be communication. If you don't speak Spanish you will need a captain who speaks English. In my opinion, one of the best fishermen in Loreto, who is also open to innovation and fluent in English, is Francisco Davis, El Pajaro.

Another is Pancho on La Barracuda, but I can't put my hands on his card right now. Try Francisco. If he's booked he can get you in touch with La Barracuda, or get back to me and I will track him down.

    Good luck.

Thanks Bill. Couldn't get either number to go through, so I sent him an e-mail.

Mike.....I'll mention to Francisco that you're trying to get in touch.
For the landline number, if calling from the States, you should first dial 011 52 then the number. For the cell, 011 52 1.

    Bill,

Spoke with Francisco and he was booked. He checked with Pancho on the Barracuda and he was booked as well. He did say you may have another recommendation? Thanks.

Alvaro Murillo, Sofia, is another good fisherman who speaks English and I'm sure would be happy to take your instructions on DR/electronics. (613) 135-0928

I'm headed out now to deploy my DR in pursuit of some 'tails......

I definitely agree that Francisco is the guy to go with. I will be returning down to Loreto on April 17-22, and will be fishing with Francisco for 3 days. I'm glad that I took Mike and Bill's recommendation and went fishing with Francisco. I've heard that the winds is blowing pretty badly the last few months...hopefully it will slow down by April. Happy Fishing!
