Baja Bytes Conditions' Recap - Tuesday, August 28, 2012

    Baja Norte

Report from Gary on the Highly Bendable: We got a gentleman's start at 8 a.m. on Sunday 8/26. Headed towards the tuna pen numbers from Fish Dope.
Stopped on a few patties on the way and located one that was holding about 10 miles south of the Islands. We landed a yellowtail and four dodo's on that patty (5 to 15 pounds).
Half of our bait rolled so we started conserving bait in hopes of having some left by the time we hit the pens. Got to the pens around noon and there were 3 PBs and 4 or 5 cattle boats. One PB was hung as we got into the zone so we shut down and started chunking our dead. Within a minute we were on! We went 2 or 3 on good-sized BFT until we ran out of bait. We were also picking up dodo's at the same time as the BFTs. The BFT were even biting red dines that were barely twitching. I'm pretty sure they would have bit the chunk with a hook in it. We didn't try it though as the wind and swell picked up A LOT which was going to make it a long ride home so we left the zone near 2 p.m. I know most were saying it was a morning bite but it was definitely still biting for us when we arrived at noon and we left them biting at 2 p.m.
    302 / 371 / 425 Triangle
Mysteriously quiet here early this morning.
Around the noon hour reports started coming in about kelps just to the inside of the 302 high spot holding lots of rat yellowtail.
A number of kelps reported to be around this area. 32.32 x 117.33 is where there is a dorado kelp. Another kelp is at 32.31 x 117.38.
    Hidden Bank
Late report from Todd Walters: Went out to the Hidden Bank. Got a blind jig stop for a nice dorado (32.07.58 117.26.49). We got another huge one on bait as well. We were called into a wide open paddie (31.57 x 117.31) for small yellowtail and finished off the day. All was good until we had a fuel problem and had to cruise in at 8 knots. Water was very choppy but hidden bank was full of life. Boat into the shop....:-(
    Tuna Pens
Word is it was good at every grey light and slows up at about 9 a.m. Typical morning here… after that it slows up with some flurries of action throughout the day. The pens are also holding a few dorado now, so don't be too surprised if your "tuna" bite starts dancing across the surface! :)
Bluefin are ranging from 12 pounds up to about 30 pounds. The surrounding water has spots of bluefin and the odd albacore showing. If you find a kelp it will probably be holding rat yellows and dorado. Any day now there could also be some yellowfin as the schools of 12- to 15-pound tuna are 15 to 25 miles to the inside and down to the southeast of here.
    230F
TONS of rat yellowtail and some dorado on every kelp above and below this spot. The big news however is the yellowfin tuna. This is the upper leading edge of a mass of them down below 100 to 150 miles.
There is not tonnage of them up this far yet BUT it's very possible to hit the magic kelp or get an open water jig stop for a bunch of them. Some bluefin and the odd school of albacore are around in this same zone. Many of the 1.5 to 3-day boats are starting out in this area.

Hit rain just south of El Rosario and crossed some vados with water. Came to a stop at a vado just north of Catavina. Held up there for 45 minutes before the first Semi made a run through, followed by 4x4, suv-types. We made a run for it and thought we were in the clear until we got to the vado at the south side only to be stopped there for 2-1/2 hours. A true Baja experience…

Wow! It's been quite a day! The Governor of Baja Sur is here in our pueblo to inaugurate our new astro turf stadium. He also announced that the day after tomorrow the nasty pot holed part of the road to Vizcaino will be repaired...hip hip hooray! He was an excellent speaker and enjoyed talking to the locals. His PR guy took our photo when I told him how important it is to our village. It was crazy with all his entourage trying to find places to stay...we are all full up!

Reports of marlin near the Petrel Bank is a promising sign for the fall billfish action. Meanwhile there are plenty of mossback yellowtail at the 13 and Thetis bank. Between there and the Entrada, small yellowfin tuna are thick as empty cerveza cans on Cinco de Mayo.
Inside the bay, the esteros are producing small grouper, corvina and the ever-present spotted bay bass plus limits of halibut according to Bob Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters.

    Final Thoughts
    [IMG]
Last week I discussed the ease of traveling by air out of Tijuana. According to Gary A. Warner, Travel Editor, OC Register, there are plans to offer Baja and Mexico flights from John Wayne Airport in the near future pending final approvals. Follow the link below for more details.
    http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/ba...0329-flights-cabo-mx-city-out-john-wayne.html
With all the recent construction, crossing the border back into the U.S. has continued to worsen. The two BD posts below reflect the frustration and disgust following 3 to 4 hour waits. http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/baja-mexico-fishing-reports-discussion/450561-border-crossing.html
    http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/ba...0-visa-boarder-experience-recent-trip-sq.html
I decided to do some research to see if there were any answers and I found one.

While I have not had a chance to try it out, there is now an app available that may provide some help. The link below has more info. It's free and I have already downloaded it on my Droid. After I have tested it for awhile I will pass on my comments. Any of you who try it, please let us know how it works for you.
