Going back to the roots of the first ever BD Yellowtail tournament event... location and entry fees seemed to be a hit for this year’s tournament! Bloodydeck’s, along with their headline sponsor – Typhoon, were eager to put on a fun event! The weekend started with the Captain’s meeting where teams showed up at San Diego Boats at Dana Landing to pick-up their packet, t-shirts, camera and rules! We had a total of 52 or so teams signed up by the close of the evening. As soon as the teams got their packets, they headed out fairly quickly. Some slept in the parking lot, some took off to get on the water and await till lines in, others drove home, hoping to get some sleep!
    DSC05704 (1024x768).jpg
In the wee hours of the morning, Brant met up with those wishing to participate in the Dash for Cash $1,500 gift card prize donated by the Dana Landing Market. There were 7 teams that showed up and were given instructions of what they needed to do, which was to be the first team in to Dana Landing with a Yellowtail! In the past years, this was not an issue. This year, we waited throughout the day but never had a team show-up with a Yellow who had entered the Dash for Cash!
The weather was cooperating, we heard that a couple of yellows were caught the day before, the day was filled with hope and the boats scattered to different “secret spots” with their game plans in place! Meanwhile, back at the San Diego Boats, Rob Sanford had his crew clear out the building the day before so we could use his building for our event! What a great location! Thank you Rob! We met with the rental company and began to setup and organize for the event while we waited for boats to come in to the weigh station. Each time we’d see a boat headed our way, we would prepare to weigh in fish and get excited! The first boat shows up and we find they have a white sea bass to weigh and they are in the Marlin Club tournament! So we weigh in their catch! We did this for a few boats, weighing in fish other than yellows. We would see boats we knew were in the tournament, bypass our dock and head to the ramp to load their boat on a trailer, no fish to weigh in. Check out all the guys looking to see what was getting weighed in! Great catch for this young man!

So we sat, we ate, we drank, we jumped seeing another boat headed in… nope, false alarm. Darn! I wanted to take some pictures! I was working my way back and forth to the building to check on the rental setup and then back to the dock in case I was needed for pictures. Then it happened! A boat! In our tournament! And they had a yellow to weigh! We all jumped into action! Annie got their tournament camera, their yellow is handed over to Clay and Cory to weigh, the weight is recorded, the Captain signs the weight receipt and I am anxious to take the first official yellow tournament pic of the year! YES!!! The main sponsor’s Typhoon banner is handed to the team and pics are taken and now we are REALLY ready for the boats to come in! But we waited again. The other weigh station had some weighed in but it was VERY slow! DARN! Pics from the first boat to weigh-in at Dana Landing:

    <o:p></o:p>
Awhile later, we see another boat coming in! It’s a team with Wayne aka “Got Wasabi?” on board! I holler out and ask… “Got Yellowtail?” Unfortunately, this team did not have some yellowtail love this year but they did catch fish!

    DSC05731 (1024x768).jpg
    DSC05732 (1024x768).jpg <o:p> </o:p>
We waited some more, I checked up on the rental equip setup crew, we drank, we ate, we waited, we hoped! Where were the boats? Then, we saw a boat come in and they told us they had 2 yellows! Yeah!!!!! Jump into action, same routine as before and pics are taken! Great job team!
    DSC05737 (768x1024).jpg <o:p> </o:p>
At this point we figure the boats are staying out until the late afternoon as we heard fishing was super slow and they needed the time on the water. Meanwhile, Cory’s new puppy Avery entertains us all including a cute little boy who was passing by. He had lots of laughs as Avery wrestled him!

Discussion ensued wondering how previous year winners were doing. We had no idea how they were doing out there and I had mentioned that I hadn’t heard or seen Team Rickdiculous come in. They are usually a contender in many tournaments they enter! Just as I mentioned them, slowly within sight, I viewed Rick’s 40’ Riviera. Unfortunately, no yellows for his team but they did catch a 5+ lb calico that we quickly weighed and released to live for another day! Good to see you guys back in the tournament year after year!

We gave a last call, announced that we had not received a dash for cash and to hurry in if they had a qualified entry and then minutes later, the weigh station was officially closed at 6:00 pm. One last check on the event room, the band had setup, all was ready and we headed home to get ready for the awards banquet the next morning.
The volunteer crew arrived and began assisting the vendors to setup their booths and coordinated final tasks. How many BDers does it take to setup…?
    DSC05754 (1024x768).jpg
Vendor booths… Typhoon, our main sponsor! They were awesome and had some GREAT eyewear for sale at a BD discount! I LOVE my new sunglasses! Thank you so much Roy!!!

5th Avenue Insurance – another BD sponsor has a vendor booth available offering all kinds of insurance services for BDers! (Boat, home, auto, health, you name it!) No Leo, not even Sherm can provide insurance for you winning the tournament!

Sea Tow is in the house! They had a booth and donated a free tow on the water for any boat needing a tow during the tournament. They also donated prizes for the raffles!

    Outstanding report Mags.. Thank you.

I believe the event could not have been any better.

No fish to weigh for me and team but we had a good time anyway.

Congrats to all who weighed a fish and more importantly to the winners.

If next year's event mirrors this one, where is the sign up roster?
    Team @-EZ is in.....

On behalf of Capt. Albert "Big fish John" Leonard, 1st. mate Phil "Philligan" Faubert, 2nd mate Rich " you know Leonard" Duby, and I, 3rd Mate Steve "Steamin Seamen Sculpin Killer" Krogh, of Team Profish, we would like to thank all of the sponsors, BD outdoors for again a wonderful event, and all the individuals who helped put on one of our favorite tournaments. The venue was great, the food was wonderful, and there were great sponsors who made it happen. Our fearless Capt. had to leave town for the Warton business school for an advanced financial management designation Saturday night so his lovely wife Kaylee and his two beautiful girls Carissa and Sophia filled in too help celebrate our win and hold all of the wonderful prizes and BIG checks. I'm sure once he gets a break from getting smart he will have a few comments too. Unfortunately the rest of the team had prior commitments and were unable to be there.
Thanks again everyone and we look forward to next years event and giving back some of these winnings.

    Tight Lines everyone.

It took the effort of many to make this event what it was! Huge thanks for the help from the volunteers from BD. It was a collaborative effort! Look at all the "red shirt" volunteers in the pictures! Those are BDers steppin in to help as they do every year, along with the BD staff: Cory, Marcus, Brant, Clay, Barrett, Ali & Jason... lots of time and effort went into making this all happen!

I think this was the slowest year as far as the number of fish weighed in but the attitude of those who fished was pretty positive for the most part! They seemed to enjoy the event even though the fishing was tough! Gotta love that!

I forgot to add that since there were no fish brought in for the "Dash for Cash" portion of the tournament, Dana Landing Market graciously provided gift certificates in the amount of $200/team to the 7 teams that entered the Dash for Cash and took the time to be there that early in the morning! Very cool surprise for those 7 teams thanks to Dana Landing!
