I know this is going to get me in trouble here, but it seems funny that everyone is so down on the BSB poacher, yet on another thread, you are applauding someone for shooting protected sea lions up north. I didn't know we got to choose which laws to obey, and which ones to ignore. And no, I am not a sea lion fan...I just think that the dichotomy is funny.

to Walkerman:
I don't think that legal vs illegal is what polarizes people here. I think the issue is that BSB are fish which reproduce slowly. They are not shy, so they are very easy to shoot, and they are returning from an endangered status due to overfishing back when they were legal.
Sea lions are overpopulated. They have no problem reproducing in large numbers, and they damage fish stock in areas where there are too many of them.
Most of us would be happy to see BSB numbers recover to a point where limited take is allowed in a sustainable fashion. Most of us would not mind seeing the sea lion numbers decline to a below-nuisance level.

A couple of you really have me chuckling. Truly, you do. I could show you pic after pic of WSB underwater that look very brown, as they are actually so bronze in color. I could show you multiple BSB pics of fish that are downright silver in color.
With just a few dives under my belt, I really do feel I am dead right in what I have posted. When I used to trek to Baja, one of my targets were BSB. I KNOW what they look like in a lot of different conditions, from the perspective of hunting them.
If you think it can not happen that these fish get mis-identified, you are not diving the right place. You need to dive where there are big, really big WSB/ and lots of BSB. I think a big part of what you do not understand is how a 40-100lb BSB acts in the water. They are not your typical slob BSB just laying there in the kelp bed. Smaller blacks are actually some very active fish, and I have seen them in multiple locations challenging the other fish around them for sardines and macks. A lot of the mid size fish are actually pretty lean, and they do not pack on that girth until later. You can believe that you are so astute that you could never, ever make a mistake like that. But then again, I'd tell you that I know a lot of people who have made this mistake. Some pulled the trigger, some did not, but it is suffice to say, unless you dive where the giants are, you don't know what you are talking about- plain and simple.Just trying to be the dog Tommy thinks I am!!!
