BOLA 6/30 and 7/1
Fished Bahia de Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday, 6/30 and 7/1 with two other friends. Probably only had a handful of boats out for both days.
Thursday we fished with Alfonso out of Daggett’s on Heidi I. We met Alfonso at 5:30 am sharp and he was already ready to go. Loaded up, launched and made bait pretty easy. We looked around at a couple of spots and ended up finding the yellowtail at Mancha Blanca, an area just south of Punta Quemado in about 125-150 feet of water. We ended up boating about 17 yellowtail between 12 to 20 pounds on live bait and Salas 6x Jr’s; probably lost about 4-5 due to equipment failure or general lack of fishing skills. We finished up fishing pretty early and headed back to the dock because the breeze and current picked up around 10:30am, but the fish were still biting.
Friday we fished with Igor on Igor II. Conditions in the morning were pretty much the same, except bait was just a little tougher to make. We checked Mancha Blanca but Igor didn’t like what was happening so we fished an area between Isla Piojo (Isla Lice) and Punta Quemado in about 150-175 feet of water. We ended up boating 11 fish between 20 to 25 pounds mostly on live bait; only two on jigs. We lost about 6 fish due to getting rocked and equipment failure. The breeze wasn’t too bad till about noon, so we headed back due to weather and lack of fishing action. It was pretty much a pick bite all that day.
Just a couple of things to note: We fished during a pretty big tidal change so when the current picked up, it was ripping. Although we were getting bit on 50 pound test dropper loops, we had a rig set up with 30 pound test that would get bit consistently. However, that rig was probably only good to land about 3-4 fish because after that, the line was so stretched out it became brittle and broke. I’ve never heard of fish being line shy at BOLA and maybe it was just fishing superstition, but the 30 pound was definitely getting bit both days. Lastly, there’s a lot of bait in the water. Igor expressed surprise that the fish were even biting. He cleaned one of the yellowtail and it must have had about 10 bait fish in its belly!
