This thread is not about whether or not it is a good idea to have an AED onboard a vessel. Of course it is. I have one in my car with me everyday.

I believe the original poster was asking if the boat owner should be required by law to have the AED as standard first aid equipment. Look at the last line of his original post.
I'm not sure, but I believe keeping your comments oriented to the original post can get you banned from BD.

You can carry your own with you like this guy and me. I had an ICD implanted last year after an syncope episode and a stress test verified a V-tach condition.

I'm one of those 2% out of 900,000 yearly heart disease deaths that just the de-fib alone would have brought back around without the need for an operation or cath-lab at the time of the event.

If guys are concerned that they might need one of these devices THEY should purchase one and bring it with them....if they are so easy to use that is.
90% of first graders are probably smarter than 90% of the guys that spend thousands on gear and trips.

Dude I'm a doctor, have worked in many different hospitals and ER's,so tell me I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. What you originally said is a rarity, if it occurs at all. In actuality, the opposite occurs. People are too aggressively treated and resuscitated because of the fear of lawsuits. Everything done is well documented and lawyers can sue you for not doing enough.

    Paul,

Very good topic, it has generated a lot of buzz from many anglers here (no pun intended).

Thank you for reminding us all to think more about the safety side of our Long Range adventures.

PS: As a professional gesture, I think it's time that you "un-cloak" yourself on this one.

    Ebnash,
I find your post very entertaining. You shocked me (no pun intended) to hear that you travel with an AED. You obviously see the need for one, yet you do not believe they should be required.

It seems that you are against the government telling the boat owner what he needs to do. Is it safe to say that you feel the same way about requiring the boat to carry fire extinguishers? How about life preservers and life rafts? Should safety seminars be eliminated. Should these four items be left up to the boat owners too as they are another example of government involvement?

I also really dislike government involvement. I do believe, however, that in the absence of people doing the right thing the government should intervene. The true question, and the question on my original post, is whether or not they should be mandated.

My personal opinion after 27 years as a firefighter paramedic is that they absolutely should. I have started IV's and administered cardiac drugs on a passenger who have had heart attack and coordinated him being airlifted from Hurricane bank. These are from my personal supply of drugs that I brought with me. I can honestly say that without intervention he would have died.

I can also tell you that I have PERSONALLY treated and transported several heart attack victims that were revived by citizens using an AED prior to our arrival (one at the CSULB graduation ceremony that was used by campus PD). They absolutely do make a world of difference.
As I have said in my previous posts, if you leave it up to the boat owners many will not do it. I applaud those wo have done it.

Here are some of the reasons I have personally heard from the owners of our long range vessels:
    1. I do not want to incur the liability (this has been addressed above and is not an issue)
    2. I do not want to incur the cost - they cost around $1,000
    3. The one that boils my blood is this - If I use an AED and revive a victim it ruins the trip as I have to return to port. In short it's a selfish business decision.

we should have a thread about health, and supplementation, IMO it is about a trillion times more exciting than fishing, especially talking fishing with all you tools.
