"..the clicker left on..." I've been on some boats where the skipper wants the clickers on because he can monitor the movement of the fish and what the angler is doing better due to limited visibility from the bridge, etc. Also, some fishing show directors want the clickers noise to "enhance" an otherwise quiet sport (I'd rather hear an irritating clicker instead of what a lot of anglers say during a show).

Regarding West vs. East you will never prove anything or convince anyone of superiority. I've fished with people from all around the world and those that have access to quality tackle, boats and maybe airfare all tend to be good fishermen and good people. Local habitats and opportunities determine fishing styles that may or may not fit well in other places. A West Coast jig fisherman would destroy a flyfisherman side by side at Alijos but put them on a bonefish flat and the fly would kill. Spinning gear has become more popular worldwide for popping and jigging but still hasn't seemed to crack the respect barrier on the West Coast. On some of my trips I'm surrounded by spinners but I still prefer conventional reels for jigging and popping. I think spinning reels are bulky, awkward. too much circumference in a handle radius and I get better distance with less bulk with a conventional. It all comes down to what works for you and how best to enjoy the sport.

how you like that rant?
Interesting but fun read and discussion on shows.

Yeah, the clicker thing on the shows can be quite annoying! I think the reason they do it is that they believe it gives the viewing audience a rush when hearing the line being torn out from a drag burning fish...... might be cool for a little bit, but then gets old.

On the same subject, I use to fish alot with a particular owner on a high end yacht, and while fishing marlin tournys, it was his practice to leave the clicker on when battling a marlin from the bow with the clicker on. This was done so that while the captain was up on the bridge or bucket running the boat, he could get an audio of what the fish was doing at all times, such as when the fish is blazing out full speed , slowing down or coming to a stop, as well as when it takes off in a hurry again..... all good things for the capt to know while up in the bridge. We always did have a guy relaying info as well either by voice or hand signals, but the clicker actually was helpful in many of those situations.

I think it would be cool to see a show somewhat like the Ultimate fighter format, where you have in this case two, three, maybe four teams with Top Captains of different backgrounds (Yachty, Longrange, Comersh, and ??) hand pick their teams from a group of somewhat unknown (to them) fisherman. Maybe have all these guys do some fishing trips together and let the Captains then pick from what they see. Then after all teams are picked, put all the captains and their teams on their own sportfisher and travel down the coast of Baja seeing who can out fish each other. I think that would be a fun reality Fishing program to watch.

I know who I would pick as the Yachty captain, but he would be pissed as hell if I put his name up here, so instead I will go with Brett McBride (Offshore Adventures/Sharkmen). Now for the Comersh Capt, hands down Steve Lasley...... you guys pick the Longrange Capt . Boy would the Egos and drama be flowing on this show with cameras picking up all of the shit talking .

You know that's true, I've hung out with him outside any kind of event, and he's genuinely a nice guy. Pretty funny actually. I wish I could get paid to fish (and not have to scrub the boat).

Kovach is a whole new issue

All anglers, across the world, learn a particular set of fundamentals (knots, water clarity/color/temp, current, casting, presentation etc). So it would be fun to take groups from total opposites, then send them somewhere totally new and see who's got who.

I also like what Tony said, it's all about what you have access to, and how you grew up fishing. Different arenas are better for others. Even if we think West Coast fishing is the greatest thing in the world, it might not be "what's best for tv "

Oh and the clicker thing while the guy is fighting and captain is driving or backing down, that totally makes sense, stoked somebody finally cleared that up. I just hate when they always leave it on even when not needed. The sound just drives me insane. I don't even put clickers on while trolling (you've got issues if you can't tell if you have a bite or not)

but I have to agree most of the fishing hosts are really lame....the worst is Mark sosin he would in my opinion be "that guy" on every trip....and unfortunately we just lost the best, Jose Wejebe....the way we fish on the West Coast is unique because of the huge live bait capacity of the boats....there are some very skilled East Coast fishermen as there are some very skilled West Coast folks......but a show where the West Coast guys go fish on the East Coast using West Coast methods and gear and the East Coast folks fishing on the West Coast using East Coast gear and techniques.....that would be interesting...but use REAL fishermen not the asshat TV buffoons....some West Coast guys like...Spike, Juilo, Bruce Smith, Jesus,Wahoodad and Mike Lackey.....just to name a few.....that would be fun to watch.....

you mean to tell me they don't have 9 foot sticks on the East Coast??? surely you have surf casting blanks?? Lol

My surf stuff starts at 12' and ends at 15' it has always been said that surf fishermen have longer poles

Bottom line, "everybody fucks different", I have not seen the show, but in my mind West Coast trumps East Coast when it comes to fishing, but there is no right answer.

Food Grade White boots must appease the FDA....JMO

Clickers,,,,Yea it bothers me too and it happens more than just on tv. I get the clicker when you are not paying attention to a rod in the holder but once the fish is on and you are cranking turn it off. But in the interest of a TV program lets the viewer know the fish is running.
