I think this is good advice for anyone and any type of fishing. I agree completely. One thing I like about fishing-there is always more to learn and new things to try. Maybe it's the scientist in me but I love to experiment with new techniques, approaches, equipment, etc. How much fun is it to figure out a new, better way to do something? Even if it isn't "better" maybe it's just more fun. God forbid I figure it all out and it gets boring!

Truth is the 700 4XH is a little stiffer than the 770XXXH and either one is not a finess rod for casting sardines. But no rod really is that good at casting sardines with a big reel. It's the legnth of the rod that casts the sardine, not the tip.
My flyline sardine rigs are a couple of 770XXH 100# rods. I think if I was in the market for a 100# rod right now I would look at the 700 3XH.

Yo Crow,
In today's Long Range World the great news is you have lots of choices. The bad news is you have lots of choices. Some folks worry which is going to be a perfect stick and before they figure it out they buy 3 of the same rods. If I were an odds maker in Vegas and I was asked to determine what the odds were of someone, without testing out every rod, getting their perfect rod I would say the odds were very good if the angler chose 3 different but well respected rods or rod manufacturers. I would say the odds would be rather lousy if an angler, again without doing their own testing, would find THEIR perfect rod if they purchased 3 of the same rods. In truth, there may be No one perfect rod for every occasion but for me variety Is the spice of life. My recommendation, if you are hell bent on purchasing 3 rods specific to cow fishing, would be to analyze what your fishing style is or might be in the future. Rail rod or harness or both. Continue to ask your good questions on this board and then perhaps pick 3 rods which might fit the bill as it applies to YOUR style, strengths, age, ability to pull harder than most or less hard than most or average, etc. Be honest about how good your technique is, ask the questions which most relate to your personal style and strengths or weaknesses and then pull the trigger based on your best hoped for results along with the size of your wallet. The great news is most of the rods noted will undoubtedly work out well for you the question is will they work out great for you.
Most folks cannot drop 350 - 600 dollars on a rod without knowing the results will be great. This is where frequenting a well respected and true long range knowledgeable tackle shop can come in very handy. Add to that these boards and your odds of picking the right rod for you increase dramatically. Of course then you have to decide if you want a custom built stick made to your size and shape or one off the rack. Oh joy, who knew it was so damn complicated?? In truth it really is not so hard.
Best of luck
Jamie

Hello Crow,
First, thank you for your service to our country. I sincerely appreciate it.
Regarding your rod inquiry, I need to compound your decision with additional options, there are many folks who use the Calstar 7465H & XH for 100-130 lbs rigs. These blanks with a gimbal and tip top end-up being 6'8" so they work very well on the rail. No problems casting sardines and pulls like an SOB! Some folks really like the taper, feel and balance of these blanks. They are effective cow harvesting tools that warrant consideration.
Everyone has an opinion. Whatever you decide is a personal choice depending on your preferences. Go pull on them to determine what you like. Blanks feel different with a reel seat, gimbal, guides and a reel on them. If you can try a complete rod before you buy, I highly recommend it. String it up and hang a 45 lbs weight from it and lift!! Then you will know...
Which reel you use is also a consideration. It is the combination of both items that makes a rig effective. Keep an open mind and enjoy the decision making journey!

I am a huge super seeker user and just recently started using phenix. And Iam amazed out how they perform. Love the weight and diameter on them and look forward to using the bigger stuff on the longer trips
