Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
Hey Gerry,
I don't think the guys are using the bent butts because they don't work with harness'.
You need to get some of those Rogues. Sweet Rods...

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
Yeah, I've heard about that, but that's the first one I've seen.
The butt looks really short. Is that the difference?

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
Heres a ST thread with more info, blank, length, guides, why, ect. I think there is some info around here too. No need to regurgitate others. Drew might have more latest developments.
I dont think its anything a rod manufacture would put into production rather for a nich market custom made.

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
Yea, the butts on my Calstars are extra short with big foot guides. They're XH instead of XXH so it's a little easier on us old men. My little brother uses them on the Pelagic in Indonesia for dog-tooth tuna and wahoo while trolling to surf spots. It seems to give better leverage. Next time I'm down I'll set one up with Lora and experiment with the harness. Harness should only need a little adjustment to work? We'll see. Of course the rod of choice for Prime Time is the Rogue. I just had these when I sent the boat down so I thought they might get some use.
G'Day...

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
I heard the bent butts put a hurt on the cows. I know the guys from Yo's fish them every year in PV and they build some of the best straight butt rods money can buy (so that should tell you something). Martin, the main rod builder at Yo's and pictured above, tells me the bent butts make the fish fight more vertically and make them to go into circles quicker. They caught 4 fish last year over 250, each were caught in less than 20 minutes. The stress of the fight is also verticle, taking less stress off the thigh and back and replacing that with a downward force towards your feet. I am looking forward to taking a few down there next year.

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
That's one big dude pulling on that thing. That rod looks sub 5'. It's getting back to the old school LR rods but with a short bent butt. I've got to get down there!

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
Here we go again...from my own personal experience using those calstar bent butts are a total pain in the arse on the boat...and they do definitely jump out of the rod holders...Lora was right...i had a saftey line tied to the rod when i was on the BI those days...
When you look at what a charter boat needs there's a lot more to consider than fighting giant tunas...i would definitely go with the straight butts...

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
A Captain is certainly entitled to his opinions, and entitled to equip his boat any way he wants. But a short bent flying out of a rodholder has more to do with that particular boats rodholders than anything else. Any boat I ride I'll bring 2 or 4 inch gimbal extensions to make sure there's no problem with the rod being secure. And yes it takes more getting used to when pulling it out and setting the hook. I suppose if most of the fishermen I charter to are new to the game I'd pick the straight butts too.
And Ali, dude you're just funny.

Re: PV trip and Dodo Carnage!
I guess I'll be exporting my bent butts back to SD and get with the program. Ok Josh, set me up with my PT PV special issue Rogues with Avets and I'll work on getting the tuna tubes set up. Any luck with installing those new props I sent down?
G'Day...
