Are there any advantages of a star drag conventional reel over a lever drag?
Maybe it used to be better freespool for casting, but I don't think that applies anymore. They don't seem any lighter. Maybe a little less complicated internals, but not by much. I dunno.
I guess just in general. Are smaller stars better than smaller levers at some things and vice versa and are bigger stars better than bigger levers at anything?
only benefit I can really see is the ability to make minor to major adjustments on the fly, opposed to minor adjustments on your LD. LD the things gotta be set just right for the line class before hook up.
This is like a blondes vs brunettes schtick... Stars cast better and levers allow you to dial in a drag setting. Outside of these two truths, the rest is personal preference.
Why limit yourself? It's just money, get some blondes, brunettes, stars, levers... whatever you can.

For the last two years I've been using all lever drags and I haven't noticed my casting length reduced much. I have all Avets and 1 Accurate and I think they cast great. Any better casting and I might be picking out birdnests a lot. I used to have a Daiwa Sealine X-50HV though that had the most insane free-spool of any reel that I've ever owned. I think it's mostly personal preference and If there are any casting benefits to star drag reels then I think it's probably fairly minor when comparing it to the nice fancy new lever drags that are out now.
I would get a lever drag if your not using it as a jig reel. Star drags can cast a jig a little further. But for live bait get a lever drag! I have a few lever drags and I have no problem casting them. Just for long casts with jigs.
