Re: I need a Real Reel for Real Sharks

91 lb Mako on TLD 10 filled with 4 lb Ande Tournament (see outfit on left side of lean post) caught by April Wakeman (my wife) La Jolla Canyon, August 2006:

DQ'd for IGFA record (existing record is 36 lbs) because I bled it while it was tied off to the boat on the flying gaff hook. They said that they don't allow bleeding the fish before weighing. The specific rule was "Shooting, harpooning, or lancing fish (including sharks and halibut) at any stage of the catch." In my mind, once a fish is on the flying gaff hook tied along side the boat, it's caught. They felt that I lanced it, which I thought only applied while fighting the fish. They apparently wanted me to put it in the boat without cutting it or bleeding it. The irony is that I had a second flying gaff hook that I could have rammed up through its head, severing its spine and it would have been all perfectly acceptable. Just can't do that with a knife.

If time and opportunity allows we'll be targeting 200 lb threshers on 16 lb, 12 lb and 100 lb threshers on 4 lb. Trust me, they're very doable on this gear if you know what you're doing.

I was talking about drinking while fishing mako's. I could really care less what reels you use to fish mako's, but if you do while drinking, it's just a matter of time before you get tagged.

    And 100lber is dink.

Wow that sucks Steve. Congrats to your wife though, that takes some skill.
