glad to see so many agree about using the heavier gear. its not fun to hook a large shark [over 200] on light tackle[under 80lb] and spend hours trying to win a losing battle. you end up beat. 90 %of the time the sharks breaks off late in the fight and hopefully swims off and not sinks out to die.

Re: I need a Real Reel for Real Sharks

I agree with the good ole 4/0 or 6/0 penn approach. I will admit that I have not caught anything worthy of such a reel yet, but its the beer budget answer to an obvious possibilty. That being said I didn't pass up that TLD 30 2 speed when Vilters offered it to me at a decent price.

Re: I need a Real Reel for Real Sharks

TOP SECRET, RUN DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL TACKLE, AND PICK UP A JAR OF POWER BAIT IN THE GREEN/YELLOW GLITTERS,THEN TYE IT ON YOUR TROUT ROD .NOW MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRESH LINE (WE DONT WANT THE LINE TO SNAP) SO PREFERBABLY 4LB OF MAXIMA , BY THE WAY HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. THEN PUT ON YOUR #12 TREBLE HOOK(WE DONT WANT THE SHARK TO SEE THE HOOK) NOW OPEN THE JAR AND SMELLS FRESH YAH. ROLL INTO A BIG BALL (FOR BIGGER SHARK) SMALL BALL (FOR SMALLER SHARKS),THEN APPLY TO HOOK, DO YOU HAVE A BOBBER.

Re: I need a Real Reel for Real Sharks

last months won mag had the shark hunter guy in it with a 1000# plus mako in it .i don't think you can be over gunned with a predator like that on the end of your line. it takes big balls just to bait a fish like that let alone try to stick a few gaffs in it
