wow i need to retire my shimino 30 for sharking.
my dad gave me a 50sw penn i guess i need to break in.
never thought about the handle or reel seat as a weak point. all my failures have been leaders or swivels.

    Avet 4/0 Wide= 525yds 100lb spectra, with 125 yds of 100 mono top shot.

650 yds of ass kicking...Not sure if there is anything in SoCal Waters thats reguires more than that. Maybe a Grey Whale, hope I dont accidently tail hook one.

Or hook a swordie, the line would break before the reel exploded so you don't have to worry about that.

Bill you fish the light gear, because you all always going for records. I know you can land em on the light stuff, but you are an exceptional angler. Most guys don't stand a chance with the light stuff.

In my opinion you are far better off using the heavier gear and being to release the fish clean. So many people break on small gear, when in reality they have no business fishing it. If you have some real skills and someone who can effectively run a boat to chase them, go ahead. otherwise stick with atleast a 30 size reel.

Tailed hooked one a few years ago on a 9/0 Senator. Damn, sure was wishing that was a 2 speed something or other. Its the only fish I've caught where I wanted to change gears and couldn't.
