Ensenada 6-4-11 Yellows and barracuda on Magic Metals

Myself and Angel Garcia left my slip out of Cruiseport Marina at 5:30AM in search of yellows. We headed to an area 3-4 miles outside Ensenada Harbor on a heading towards Punta Banda. This is where we found working birds and the barracuda were pretty much a fish a cast on the iron and ranged from 3-10 lbs. Find the birds and you’ll find the barracuda. If the birds have porpoise under them I wouldn't waste time on them. The bay is full of life right now and the fish are feeding on tiny anchovies so finding working birds is really not a problem. The yellows showed up around 9:30 and we chased birds and breaking fish until 4 PM. I managed to catch 4 yellows out of 6 solid hookups ranging from 14-19 lbs on an anchovy colored Magic Metal jig and Angel who was using megabaits and tady’s went 0 for 3. There was a huge volume of yellows and they looked like they were going to be around for awhile. There is also bait available in Ensenada Harbor. As long as the weather holds up we should be in for some good fishing for a while. Water temps were 61.8 to 64.0 degrees. One note on the Magic Metal jigs. I was using Tady 45's and Salas 7X's and the yellows would follow them right to the boat. The only anchovy colored lure I had, besides plastics, was the MM jig in the 45 size. It got bit constantly and I caught both barracuda and the yellows on it.

The Magic Metal jigs are made by Dan Hernandez and you can find them on his website. They make a rattling noise and they swim tighter than the Tady's. The one I was using was the 7" size. Don't get me wrong about Tady's and Salas jigs because I have caught many yellows on both but on this day the MM jig in the anchovy color worked great.

Excellent catch, Thanks for the report. Suprised that the captains in San Quintin are not going out and doing a little exploratory fishing despite the weather.Im sure that the water temp is perfect and the kelp patties are holding some nice fish !!
