Baja Bytes Conditions' Recap - Tuesday, August 14, 2012
Gary Graham
This week's picks:
Sailfish…Los Cabos
Yellowtail…Bay of L.A.
Dorado…La Paz
Yellowfin tuna…Las Arenas
Baja Norte
Bull Ring
The hot Sand Bass fishing backed way off yesterday and reports are still saying it's slow this morning.
The Bass are out over the mud bottom. Look for a cloud on your meter, and chum them with piece's of squid and small chunked up piece's of sardine.
Coronado Islands
Yellowtail continue to show well around the Islands with the Middle grounds having the best numbers of yellows. There is also a ton of sea lions. Some guys are not able to land a single fish this morning because of the Dogs.
The Lighthouse and SKR are also spots with a volume of yellowtail around.
There continues to be a fair amount of barracuda at the Ribbon Kelp if you interested in some jig fishing action.
Boat traffic is very light. No sign of the Mexican Navy this morning.
Report from Mr. Sneeb: Roughly 7:15 am or so. Bait was mixed with big and small dines from San Diego Bay (mostly big ones of which about 50% died).
Started at the north end of middle grounds by ourselves, fly-lined dines; within two minutes pops hooked into a yellow but didn't have his drag set so lost that one.
Was slow all morning after that.
Went down to Rockpile and saw some terns hovering looking into the water, hooked into something and the hook was bit off, felt like a big 'cuda maybe.
Went back up to middle grounds about 1:30 or so and fly-lined and was picked up within about two minutes again but had a birdnest so of course lost that one.
Watched it come up to the surface and grab a bait, flashed nice size silver and got hooked but lost it as soon as the slack line tightened up and I needed the drag. Basically went 0-3 on the yellows.
Water was roughly about 71 degrees average. Once the fog cleared(got pretty thick in the am), could see a handful of boats north of bird shit rock.
The yellows are still biting and (like fish dope already reported) they seem like a nicer (at least 20#) grade of fish. Saw at most about ten boats down there all day.
No Mexican Navy…probably hung-over from their win over Brazil yesterday, ha!

Offshore
425/101
There is a break running between these high spots and it is collecting small scraps of kelp and building a couple of larger ones. These are holding dorado and some yellowtail
Nice kelp at 32.15.48 x 117.14.36. This one is holding lots of yellowtail and a few dorado.
Upper Hidden Bank / Hidden Bank
A few more albacore showed up again this morning. A report came from a boat getting a triple jig stop on the albies but the exact location is not known yet, other than the fish are on the Hidden Bank.
Scattered kelps around are holding dorado.
It's windy and that's making it difficult to find kelps.

Ensenada

Monday, the Baja Bandido from OC caught a beautiful albacore of 25 lbs (aprox.) and a nice 18lb dorado. Owner of the vessel is Alex Borglan…in the pic is crew (left to right) Glenn Gordy and Dino Terracciano holding the nice albacore..caught in the 425 area trolling. Nice smooth water and warm water temps of about 68F and going up. Cheers, Mariana, Coral Marine Store

Lee Bailey and his grandchildren from Twenty-Nine Palms CA went
fishing with Hector catching one nice 48 lb White Sea Bass
- Last Week's Report
Home run on white sea bass!
Also of note: John took his 22' Cat offshore on Friday and caught this 45-pound bluefin off a paddy!

Greg Aamodt from Minnesota went fishing with Beto
and they caught a nice 34-pound white sea bass and bottom fish.

That netted us $600 which would be just the beginning of our luck. The three us also won prizes in the raffles as well. The really good news was that everyone was entered into a drawing that involved randomly picking the type of fish and the weight. If no one had the exact weight for that type fish then the closest weight below and above would qualify for a drawing for $5000! The fish picked was a yellowtail and the weight was 20.2 lbs. No one had it exactly but we had a 19.7 lb'er and the closest above the 20.2 lb weight was Team Borracho that had a fish 20.9 lbs. The two of us filled out slips of paper with our team name on it and wouldn't you know it after what seemed like an eternity the marina manager, Fito Espinoza finally picked Team It's 4 Reels as the winners of the big check!

Wow! It's been quite a day! The Governor of Baja Sur is here in our pueblo to inaugurate our new astro turf stadium. He also announced that the day after tomorrow the nasty pot holed part of the road to Vizcaino will be repaired...hip hip hooray! He was an excellent speaker and enjoyed talking to the locals. His PR guy took our photo when I told him how important it is to our village. It was crazy with all his entourage trying to find places to stay...we are all full up!

The weather was hot without too much humidity and the water was calm most days until about 2 pm. Bait was plentiful, both macs and bigeye, and we had no problem making bait in about a half hour.
Fishing has gone from OK to bad.
Sunday 7/22: Ran north toward San Bruno Bajo and then East trolling artificials. Nothing other than a few juvenile sailfish jumping.
Thursday 7/26: Word was that there were dorado very close-in to the north. Took us 1.5 hours to make bait and then went north toward San Bruno Bajo again. "Perfect conditions"... good water temps and lots of sargasso because of wind earlier in the week. Found nothing but scattered and very small dorado. They were so small (<10lbs) that they were difficult to hook. We kept one because it was a "first" for one of my crew... then we went fishing for dinner (pinto bass and canejo).
Very disappointing... I'll try again in October when I return.
Cheers,
Roger Franklin

Reports of marlin near the Petrel Bank is a promising sign for the fall billfish action. Meanwhile there are plenty of mossback yellowtail at the 13 and Thetis bank. Between there and the Entrada, small yellowfin tuna are thick as empty cerveza cans on Cinco de Mayo.
Inside the bay, the esteros are producing small grouper, corvina and the ever-present spotted bay bass plus limits of halibut according to Bob Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters.
