Baja Bytes Conditions Recap 05.01.12
Untitled Document
Baja Bytes
Gary Graham

Driving in Baja can be daunting for first-timers as well as seasoned road warriors. Updated information is always the foundation that a safe trip is built on…the more, the better. This is the reason we often highlight posts that have some helpful information to add to your personal data bank. The trick is to separate the important pieces of info from the idle chit chat that sometimes slips in. My advice, read it all and depend on your instincts to decide what is really important from what is simply BS that while entertaining may not have much to do with the outcome of your adventure. All of which is personally relevant today since I am pointing my Roadtrek south tomorrow morning for another trip filled with adventure. See ya' on Mex 1.

The relentless winds finally subside and spring is settling in. Rumors of yellowfin and yellowtail continue to be just that…rumors. Meanwhile the small halibut are biting big time in the bay according to Bob Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters.
La Paz & Los Arenas

Yes, I do get out now and then and we had our 11th Annual Cabin Fever Classic here in La Paz. It was a blast! This dorado turns out to be the first of the season and quite a big boy for so early in the year! But it was swimming through a school of bonito when we spotted it and threw a live bait and it bit! A great catch. I'm standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Another Day at the Ranch

Ruthless April 27th. This angler was overjoyed to meet his marlin up close and personal before letting him go.

San Carlos

Well, I’m just over the yellowtail, I guess. We caught six yesterday at the Island.http://scaamexico.wordpress.com/
Tough work, but at times we were chasing a large school in close to the rocks
and we were getting a decent jig bite in the afternoon. There was a ton of bait
around. I swear that we saw a few marlin jumping farther out and maybe some
small foot-long dorado in close. The wind is down, in the right direction, and
the dorado and marlin should come in this week. I hope that we find some
tuna out there!
Mazatlan

was taken right after the catch. The Harbormaster of The El Cid Marina
caught this aggressive fish near the coast of Mazatlan. As it is very
well known, this species can be found from May through November
in beaches near Mazatlan such as Celestino, Marmol, El Yugo and
the Engraved Rocks. Come give it a try as the season is about to begin!
Puerto Vallarta

Kid's conk 'em and have the smiles to prove it.
Punta Mita 4/25
Zihuatanejo
The only other action in town is the near shore fishing for sierras and black skipjack.
Adolfo, on the panga Dos Hermanos, has been working an area in front of Troncones
for the last two weeks. He has been racking up some very impressive numbers
with the tasty sierras.

Costa Rica

There are quite a few large floating objects, trees, pallets, old nets,
offshore holding tons of very small yellow fins, and dorado of all sizes,
triple tails, and lots of other stuff. Good to see this showing up,
makes some very good fishing.
Panama

Everyone is smiling except the red one.

Final Thoughts
Wow! May already. This is the time that Baja Sur takes center stage. In fellow columnist Bill Boyce's words, "Sick it is, just sick…" Yellowtail clinging to the spotlight in Loreto as the impending world-famous dorado explosion ramps up drawing anglers year after year for the opportunity to shake and bake in the midday sun.
Farther south, La Paz already has the making of a barn burner. While East Cape and San Jose play catch up, Los Cabos missed out on the hoped for marlin bonanza early in the year. Seems to be taking another run at it in May according to some of the secret channel chatter. All in all, yay for May!
