BD BOOK REVIEW | THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO SURFCASTING

joe cermeleJoe Cermele, the author of “The Complete Guide to Surfcasting,” isn't just a good writer, he's also one heck of an angler. You only need to flip a few pages into his book on surfcasting before you get the sense that this author knows what he's talking about. And, even better, he knows what readers want in a how-to book — and delivers it in spades.

This 320-page book delivers every bit of information you could possibly want on the subject of surfcasting, or catching saltwater fish from the shore, jetties and/or inlets. There are several chapters devoted to the tackle and gear you need to get started, including rods, reels, hooks and line. From there the author expertly explains the many different ways you can effectively rig and fish with the various types of bait and lures. The rigs are illustrated with easy-to-understand graphics that will help you when it comes time to actually use one of the setups on the beach.

The author also provides the reader with detailed information on all of the primary surf species. And, he holds no bias as far as location goes (that's pretty impressive considering he mainly fishes in New York and New Jersey). From barred surf perch in Southern California to spotted sea trout in the Gulf of Mexico, Cermele lays out the info on all of the popular game fish that you can land from shore and the most storied seaside haunts to try your luck at. He even devotes a chapter to the pelagic speedsters that you can target from shore such as false albacore and Spanish mackerel. From there, the book explains how to read the water and where you should set up to find the most action.

From cover to cover, this book is chock full of information that will apply to any surfcaster, whether they're a novice or a seasoned professional.

Cermele, who is also the Fishing Editor at Field & Stream magazine (and a frequent poster on the BD forums), does a wonderful job explaining the sport in every facet. Absorb all of the information in The Complete Guide Surfcasting and I bet you could give Joe a run for his money the next time you see him popping a plug off the beach for some striped bass.

Available from Burford Books at www.burfordbooks.com, the book retails for $19.95.
