Baitcasters continue to evolve into lighter, smoother casting reels and the new Abu Garcia Revo MGX low-profile reel falls in line with that evolution. Abu Garcia used a compact design, a one-piece X-Mag magnesium alloy frame and lighter-than-aluminum C6 carbon sideplates to create this line of ultra-lightweight baitcasters. The reel weighs in at just 5.4 ounces.
The Revo MGX impressed the judges at the recent ICAST tackle trade show so much that it took home the Best Freshwater Reel Award. The Revo MGX also uses what Abu calls the Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake system (IVCB-IVTM), which can be adjusted externally without removing the sideplate. The precise brake adjustments allow anglers to cast in a range of conditions with a variety of bait sizes, especially extremely light baits.
The MGX uses nine stainless steel HPCRTM (High Performance Corrosion Resistant) bearings plus a roller bearing, Infini IITM spool, Carbon MatrixTM drag system and Titanium coated line guide. The aircraft-grade aluminum main gear reduces weight as does the compact carbon handle with flat EVA knobs. The recessed reel foot is more comfortable and moves the crank handle closer to the reel.
Because this reel is so compact and ergonomic, Abu introduced new gear ratios for the MGX that provide similar line retrieve rates as other existing Revo reels. The Revo MGX 7.1:1 gear ratio provides similar inches per turn “IPT” to other standard 6.4:1 Revo models (28 IPT). The Revo MGX 7.9:1 high-speed gear ratio model provides similar IPT to other 7.1:1 high speed Revo models (31 IPT). The Revo MGX holds 115 yards of 12-pound monofilament or 110 yards of 30-pound braid. Two models of the Revo MGX are available, both in right hand retrieve and retail for $349.95.
